حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَمَّا عَوَّلَتْ عَلَيْهِ حَفْصَةُ فَقَالَ يَا حَفْصَةُ أَمَا سَمِعْتِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ الْمُعَوَّلُ عَلَيْهِ يُعَذَّبُ قَالَ وَعَوَّلَ صُهَيْبٌ فَقَالَ عُمَرُ يَا صُهَيْبُ أَمَا عَلِمْتَ أَنَّ الْمُعَوَّلَ عَلَيْهِ يُعَذَّبُ.
‘Affan narrated to us; Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us; Thabit narrated to us, from Anas, that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, when Hafsah wailed for him, said, ‘Hafsah, have you not heard the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “The one wailed over is punished”?’ Suhayb wailed for him too, and ‘Umar said, ‘Suhayb, do you not know that the one wailed over is punished?’
