Musnad Ahmad 279, 280

‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, from al-Sa’ib ibn Yazid, from ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Sa‘di, who said: ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said to me, “Have I not been told that you carry out some public duties, but when you are given the stipend, you do not accept it?” I said, “Yes.” He asked, “Why do you do that?” I replied, “I am well-off; I have servants and horses. I want my work to be charity for the Muslims.” He said, “Do not do that. I used to do as you do. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would give me something, and I would say, ‘Give it to someone more in need of it than I am.’ He would say, ‘Take it: either make it your property or give it in charity. Whatever Allah gives you from this wealth when you have not been seeking or asking for it, take it; otherwise, do not set your heart on it.’” ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us; Ma‘mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from al-Sa’ib ibn Yazid, who said: ‘Umar met ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Sa‘di and mentioned a report with the same meaning, except that he said, “Give it in charity,” and “Do not set your heart on it.”
