Musnad Ahmad 294

Ya‘qub narrated to us; my father narrated to us, from Salih. Ibn Shihab said: Salim said: I heard ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar say: ‘Umar said, ‘Send me a doctor to examine this wound of mine.’ They sent for an Arab doctor, who gave ‘Umar date beverage. It came out looking like blood from the stab wound below his navel. I called another doctor, an Ansari from Banu Mu‘awiyah, who gave him milk. The milk came out of the wound pure white. The doctor said to him, ‘Commander of the Faithful, make your bequest.’ ‘Umar said, ‘The man from Banu Mu‘awiyah has told me the truth. If you had said anything else, I would have called you a liar.’ The people wept for him when they heard this, but he said, ‘Do not weep over us. Whoever wishes to weep, let him go out. Have you not heard what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The deceased is punished because of his family’s weeping over him?’ For this reason, ‘Abd Allah would not permit weeping in his presence for anyone who died, whether one of his children or anyone else.’
