Yazid narrated to us; Asbagh informed us, from Abu al-‘Ala’ al-Shami, who said: Abu Umamah put on a new garment. When it reached his collarbone, he said: ‘Praise belongs to Allah, who clothed me with what covers my nakedness and with which I adorn myself during my life.’ Then he said: I heard ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Whoever obtains a new garment and puts it on, then says when it reaches his collarbone, “Praise belongs to Allah, who clothed me with what covers my nakedness and with which I adorn myself during my life,” then takes the garment that has become worn—or he said, that he has taken off—and gives it in charity, will be under the covenant of Allah Most High, in Allah’s protection and under Allah’s care, in life and in death, in life and in death, in life and in death.’
