Yahya ibn Hammad and ‘Affan narrated to us; they said: Abu ‘Awanah narrated to us, from Dawud ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Awdi, from Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari, who narrated to us: Ibn ‘Abbas narrated to us in Basra: I was the first to come to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, when he was stabbed. He said, ‘Remember three things from me, for I fear the people may not reach me. As for me, I have made no ruling on kalalah, I have appointed no successor over the people, and every enslaved person I own is free.’ The people said to him, ‘Appoint a successor.’ He said, ‘Whichever of those I do, someone better than me has done it. If I leave the people to decide their own affairs, Allah’s Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left it that way. And if I appoint a successor, someone better than me—Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him—appointed one.’ I said to him, ‘Rejoice in Paradise: you accompanied the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for a long time, you were entrusted with the affairs of the believers, you acted with strength, and you fulfilled the trust.’ He said, ‘As for your giving me glad tidings of Paradise, by Allah, if I possessed the whole world, I would ransom it from the terrors before me, before I even learn the news.’ (‘Affan said: “No, by Allah, besides whom there is no god: if I possessed the whole world…”) As for what you said about my having charge of the believers’ affairs, by Allah, I wish that it had been an even balance, neither for me nor against me. As for what you mentioned of accompanying Allah’s Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that is [as you said].’
