Translation

Yahya ibn Adam narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Ayyash, from Hakim ibn Hakim, from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl, who said: ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, wrote to Abu ‘Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah: “Teach your boys to swim and your fighters to shoot arrows.” They would regularly go to the targets for practice. An errant arrow struck a boy and killed him; its source could not be found. The boy was in the care of a maternal uncle. Abu ‘Ubaydah wrote to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asking, “To whom should I deliver his blood money?” ‘Umar wrote back to him: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to say: Allah and His Messenger are the patron of one who has no patron, and the maternal uncle is the heir of one who has no heir.”’
