Sufyan narrated to us, from Ayyub, from Ibn Sirin, who heard it from Abu al-‘Ajfa’, who said: I heard ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, say: ‘Do not set women’s bridal payments excessively high. If doing so were an honor in this world or a sign of piety in the Hereafter, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would have been the most entitled to it. He did not give any of his daughters in marriage, nor marry any of his wives, for more than twelve uqiyyahs.’ Another thing you say during your campaigns is: ‘So-and-so was killed as a martyr,’ or ‘So-and-so died a martyr,’ when perhaps he had loaded his mount’s rear with gold and silver to seek trade. Do not say that; rather say as Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: ‘Whoever is killed in the path of Allah is in Paradise.’’
