Translation

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far and Hajjaj narrated to us; they said: Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Sa‘d ibn Ibrahim, who said: I heard ‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Utbah relate from Ibn ‘Abbas, from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf, who said: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, performed Hajj and wished to deliver a sermon to the people. ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf said, “The rabble of the people have gathered around you, so postpone it until you reach Medina.” When he arrived in Medina, I came close to him near the pulpit and heard him say: “Some people say, ‘Why is there stoning, when the Book of Allah mentions only flogging?’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stoned, and we stoned after him. Were it not for the fear that they would say, ‘He has added to the Book of Allah what is not in it,’ I would have recorded it as it was revealed.”’
