Musnad Ahmad 362, 363

Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us; he said: I heard Abu Jamrah al-Duba‘i relate from Juwayriyah ibn Qudamah, who said: I performed Hajj and came to Medina in the year ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was struck. He delivered a sermon and said, ‘I saw as though a red rooster pecked me once—or twice; Shu‘bah was uncertain.’ Then what happened was that he was stabbed. Permission was given for people to visit him. The first to enter were the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then the people of Medina, then the people of Syria; after that, the people of Iraq were admitted, and I entered among them. Whenever a group entered, they praised him and wept. When we entered, he had wrapped his abdomen with a black turban, and blood was flowing. We said, ‘Give us your counsel.’ No one other than us had asked him for counsel. He said, ‘Hold fast to the Book of Allah, for you will not go astray as long as you follow it.’ We said, ‘Counsel us.’ He said, ‘I urge you to care for the Emigrants, for the people will grow numerous while they become few. I urge you to care for the Helpers, for they are Islam’s community to which refuge was given. I urge you to care for the Bedouins, for they are your roots and your strength. I urge you to care for those under covenant, for they are your Prophet’s covenant and the livelihood of your dependents. Leave me now.’ He gave us no more than these words. Muhammad ibn Ja‘far said: Shu‘bah said: I asked him about it later, and he said regarding the Bedouins, ‘I urge you to care for the Bedouins, for they are your brothers and the enemy of your enemy.’ Hajjaj narrated to us; Shu‘bah informed us; I heard Abu Jamrah al-Duba‘i relate from Juwayriyah ibn Qudamah, who said: I performed Hajj and came to Medina in the year ‘Umar was struck. He mentioned a similar report, except that he said, ‘I urge you to care for those under covenant, for they are the covenant of your Prophet.’ Shu‘bah said: I asked him about it later, and he said regarding the Bedouins, ‘I urge you to care for the Bedouins, for they are your brothers and the enemy of your enemy.’
