Bahz narrated to us; he said: ‘Affan narrated to us; they said: Hammam narrated to us; Qatadah narrated to us, from Abu Nadr, who said: I said to Jabir ibn ‘Abd Allah, “Ibn al-Zubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, forbids tamattu‘, while Ibn ‘Abbas commands it.” He said to me, “This report came through me: we practiced tamattu‘ with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.” ‘Affan said, “And with Abu Bakr.” When ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, assumed authority, he addressed the people and said, “The Qur’an is the Qur’an, and the Messenger of Allah is the Messenger. There were two forms of mut‘ah in the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: one was the mut‘ah of Hajj, and the other was the mut‘ah of women.”’
