Translation

‘Affan narrated to us; Shu‘bah narrated to us, from al-Hakam, from Abu Wa’il, from Subay‘ ibn Ma‘bad, who said: I was a Christian of Taghlib, then became Muslim. I asked which deed was best, and I was told, ‘Striving in the way of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.’ I wanted to go out for that, but I was asked, ‘Have you performed Hajj?’ I said, ‘No.’ I was told, ‘Perform Hajj and ‘umrah, then strive.’ So I entered ihram for both together. I met Zayd ibn Suhan and Salman ibn Rabi‘ah, who said, ‘He is more astray than his camel,’ or, ‘He is no better guided than his camel.’ I went to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, and told him what they had said. He said, ‘You have been guided to the Sunnah of your Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him’—or, ‘to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.’’
