Waki‘ narrated to us; ‘Umar ibn al-Walid al-Shanni narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Buraydah, who said: ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, sat in a place where the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to sit, where funeral processions passed by. A funeral passed, and people praised the deceased favorably. He said, “It is confirmed.” Then another funeral passed, and they praised its deceased favorably; he said, “It is confirmed.” Then another passed, and they praised its deceased favorably; he said, “It is confirmed.” Then a funeral passed and they said, “This man was the most dishonest of people.” He said, “The most dishonest of people are those who lie about Allah, followed by those who lie about their own soul while it remains in their body.” They asked, “What if four people testify?” He said, “It is confirmed.” They asked, “Or three?” He said, “Three as well—it is confirmed.” They asked, “And two?” He said, “It is confirmed. Had I asked about one, it would have been dearer to me than red camels.” ‘Umar was asked, “Is this something you say from your own judgment, or something you heard from the Messenger of Allah?” He said, “No; rather, I heard it from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”’
