‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from his father, from ‘Abayah ibn Rifa‘ah, who said: News reached ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, that when Sa‘d built the palace, he said, ‘Now the voices have been cut off.’ ‘Umar sent Muhammad ibn Maslamah to him. When Muhammad arrived, he brought out his fire steel, kindled a fire, and bought firewood for a dirham. It was said to Sa‘d, ‘A man has done such-and-such.’ He said, ‘That is Muhammad ibn Maslamah.’ Sa‘d came out to him and swore by Allah that he had not said it. Muhammad said, ‘We will convey to you what you have said and do what we have been commanded.’ Then he burned the door. Sa‘d offered to provide him with provisions, but he refused. He left and came to ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, traveling both ways in nineteen [days]. ‘Umar said, ‘Were it not for my good opinion of you, I would have thought you had not conveyed our message.’ He said, ‘I did. Sa‘d sent greetings, apologized, and swore by Allah that he had not said it.’ ‘Umar asked, ‘Did he give you any provisions?’ He said, ‘No.’ ‘Umar said, ‘What prevented you from providing some for me yourself?’ He replied, ‘I disliked asking for you to be given the cool food while I had the hot food, with the people of Medina around me struck by hunger. I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “A man should not eat his fill while his neighbor goes hungry.”’
