Chapter 1

Life and education

Originally from Basra, Al-Ashʿarī studied with the Muʿtazili theologian Abū ʿAlī al-Jubbāʾī before breaking with his teaching.

Chapter 2

Understanding the work

Maqālāt al-islāmiyyīn describes the doctrines of different Muslim groups. Al-Lumaʿ presents his theological arguments. His work helped shape Sunni kalām, subsequently developed by generations of scholars.

Chapter 3

Method and contribution

His writings serve different purposes. Maqālāt al-islāmiyyīn describes Muslim groups’ opinions, while Al-Lumaʿ constructs doctrinal arguments. An opinion presented in a survey is not necessarily his own; identifying the speaker and the thesis under discussion is essential.

Chapter 4

Transmission and legacy

The Ash‘ari school developed through later generations of theologians. It has an internal history and varied formulations; later developments cannot all be reduced to the founder’s books. His break with his Mu‘tazili milieu also belongs in its historical debates.

Chapter 5

A guide to reading

Begin with the terms the author defines and the questions being answered. Distinguish the author’s position from reported objections. These texts belong to historical debates: the same expression may carry different meanings across schools and periods.
