Understanding the work
His work on hadith sciences, known as the Muqaddima, organises types of reports, transmission rules and narrator criticism. It inspired numerous abridgements, commentaries and verse adaptations.

Method and contribution
He organises knowledge needed to describe and evaluate transmission. His Muqaddima distinguishes report types, narrators’ conditions and ways of receiving and transmitting texts. These are not mere labels: they identify specific problems understood through examples and scholarly usage.

Transmission and legacy
His synthesis became a basis for An-Nawawī, Al-ʿIrāqī, Ibn Ḥajar and others. Abridgements, poems and commentaries reorganised and debated its questions. This legacy is a working tradition: learning terminology also involves its development and possible disagreements.

A guide to reading
Read a chapter heading alongside its reports. Comparing wording and chains helps explain why an author preserves several versions. Inclusion in a collection does not replace checking a report’s assessment and a commentary; selection aims differ between works.
