Hadith Text
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "A hole has been opened in the dam of Gog and Magog." Wuhaib (the sub-narrator) made the number 90 (with his index finger and thumb).
Scholarly Commentary
This hadith refers to the barrier constructed by Dhul-Qarnayn mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf, which confines the corrupt nations of Gog and Magog. The opening of a hole signifies the beginning of their emergence, one of the major signs preceding the Day of Judgment.
The gesture indicating ninety suggests either the size of the breach or the number of holes initially opened. Classical scholars interpret this as a gradual process where their corruption will slowly spread across the earth.
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains that this breach marks the commencement of fitnah (tribulation) that will intensify until their full emergence, when they will drink dry every source of water and bring widespread destruction.
Eschatological Significance
This prophecy demonstrates the truthfulness of the Prophet's (ﷺ) knowledge of the unseen, granted to him by Allah. It serves as a warning to believers to strengthen their faith and prepare for the increasing trials preceding the final hour.
The emergence of Gog and Magog represents one of the three major signs mentioned in authentic narrations that will occur in quick succession before the Day of Judgment, alongside the descent of Jesus (peace be upon him) and the appearance of the Dajjal.
