Sahih al-Bukhari 5560
Ḥajjāj ibn al-Minhāl narrated to us: Shuʿbah narrated to us, saying: Zubayd informed me: I heard al-Shaʿbī narrate from al-Barāʾ (may God be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ preaching. He said: “The first thing we do on this day of ours is pray, then return and sacrifice. Whoever does that has followed our Sunnah. Whoever sacrifices before that has only provided meat for his family; it has nothing to do with the sacrificial rite.” Abū Burdah said, “Messenger of God, I slaughtered before praying, and I have a jadhaʿah that is better than a mature animal.” He said: “Use it in its place, but it will not suffice—or fulfill the rite—for anyone after you.”
