Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu' [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrection".
The Excellence of Supplication After Adhan
This noble hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari 614 reveals the immense virtue of reciting the specific supplication after hearing the call to prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) guarantees his intercession on the Day of Judgment for whoever utters these words with sincerity and understanding.
Linguistic Analysis of the Supplication
"Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda'watit-tammah" - O Allah, Lord of this perfect call: The call is described as "perfect" because it contains the fundamental declaration of Islamic monotheism - La ilaha illallah.
"Was-salatil qa'imah" - And of the established prayer: This refers to the obligatory prayers that are established continuously within the Muslim community.
"Ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah" - Grant Muhammad the intercession and excellence: Al-Wasilah is the highest station in Paradise, which only one person will attain, and we ask that it be our Prophet.
Scholarly Commentary on Intercession
The great scholar Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains in Fath al-Bari that this hadith demonstrates the special status of the Prophet's intercession (Shafa'ah). The guaranteed intercession mentioned here is the "Greater Intercession" when all creation will seek relief on the Day of Judgment.
Imam al-Qurtubi notes that this supplication combines both worldly and otherworldly benefits - it affirms Tawhid, acknowledges the establishment of prayer, and seeks the highest spiritual stations for the Prophet and consequently for the supplicant.
Practical Implementation
Scholars unanimously agree that this supplication should be recited immediately after the Adhan concludes, before the Iqamah begins. The listener should recite it in a state of humility and presence of heart, contemplating the magnitude of what they're asking for.
It is recommended to face the Qiblah while reciting this du'a and to raise one's hands in supplication, as this is the general etiquette for making du'a. The believer should have firm conviction that Allah will accept this prayer, as it is based on the Prophet's explicit promise.
