Translation
Narrated `Abdullah

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The best people are those living in my generation, and then those who will follow them, and then those who will follow the latter. Then there will come some people who will bear witness before taking oaths, and take oaths before bearing witness." (Ibrahim, a sub-narrator said, "They used to beat us for witnesses and covenants when we were still children.")

Companions of the Prophet - Sahih al-Bukhari 3651

This narration from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) establishes the superior merit of the first three generations of Muslims, known collectively as the "Salaf al-Salih" (the Righteous Predecessors). The first generation comprises the Sahaba (Companions), the second the Tabi'un (Successors), and the third the Tabi' al-Tabi'in (Followers of the Successors). Their excellence stems from their direct proximity to the source of revelation, their unparalleled sacrifice, and their pristine understanding and implementation of Islam.

The Excellence of the Early Generations

The Prophet's statement is a definitive textual proof of the virtue of these early communities. Their era was the era of revelation, divine support, and the establishment of the religion. Their faith was the strongest, their knowledge the most profound, and their deeds the most sincere, making them the most perfect human communities after the prophets.

This hierarchy is not merely chronological but qualitative. It serves as a fundamental principle for Ahl al-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah: the understanding and practice of these early generations is the benchmark for religious truth. To deviate from their path is to risk innovation and misguidance.

The Warning Against Moral Decline

The latter part of the hadith warns of a time when moral and religious integrity will decline. The act of "bearing witness before taking oaths, and taking oaths before bearing witness" indicates a society where truthfulness has eroded. People will be so quick to swear oaths frivolously or testify falsely that the sequence and solemnity of these sacred acts will become meaningless.

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i's supplementary comment, "They used to beat us for witnesses and covenants when we were still children," illustrates the immense importance the Tabi'un placed on integrity from a young age. This physical discipline was not mere punishment but a rigorous educational method to instill the gravity of bearing truthful witness and honoring covenants, ensuring these virtues became ingrained in their character.
