Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Allah will not look at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit.''
Hadith Text & Context
The noble hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari (5783) states: "Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, 'Allah will not look at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit.'" This prohibition addresses the practice of Isbal - letting one's garment extend below the ankles.
Meaning of "Allah Will Not Look"
The phrase "Allah will not look" signifies divine displeasure and deprivation of mercy. As Imam An-Nawawi explains, it means Allah will not look upon such a person with mercy and acceptance on the Day of Judgment, nor will He grant them His special grace and protection.
The Prohibition of Isbal
Scholars unanimously agree that dragging garments below the ankles is prohibited when done out of arrogance. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani states in Fath al-Bari that this applies to both men and women, though for women it is permitted for covering, while for men it is forbidden when done boastfully.
The Element of Conceit
The crucial condition mentioned is "out of conceit" (khiyala'). Imam Al-Qurtubi explains that khiyala' refers to pride and showing off with one's clothing. However, many scholars including Imam Ahmad held that the prohibition applies regardless of intention, as the outward appearance itself resembles arrogance.
Practical Implications
The proper Muslim attire should be above the ankles. Ibn Taymiyyah emphasized that the garment should not extend beyond what is necessary. This teaching promotes modesty, prevents wastefulness in clothing, and cultivates humility before Allah and among people.
Spiritual Consequences
Ibn al-Qayyim notes that this severe warning indicates how seriously Islam takes matters that cultivate pride and arrogance. Since clothing is a daily necessity, maintaining proper limits in it constantly reminds the believer of their humility before Allah and protects them from spiritual diseases of the heart.
