Hadith Text & Context

Narrated Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "The Prophet (ﷺ) returned from a journey when I had hung a thick curtain having pictures (in front of a door). He ordered me to remove it and I removed it." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5955)

Prohibition of Images

This hadith establishes the clear prohibition of keeping images of animate beings in living spaces. The Prophet's immediate command to remove the curtain, without delay or compromise, indicates the seriousness of this matter in Islamic law.

Scholars explain that images of beings possessing souls (humans, animals) are forbidden due to their imitation of Allah's creative act and potential for leading to idolatry. The curtain's thickness and decorative nature show that even valuable items must be discarded when they violate Islamic principles.

Wisdom Behind the Ruling

The prohibition serves to protect tawhid (monotheism) by preventing anything that could become an object of veneration. It also cultivates spiritual purity by removing distractions that may harden the heart or lead to vanity.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani notes in Fath al-Bari that the Prophet's action upon immediate return shows his constant vigilance in maintaining Islamic standards in his household, teaching through practical example rather than mere instruction.

Scholarly Applications

Classical scholars derived from this that all images of animate beings used as decorations are forbidden, regardless of their material value. This includes photographs, drawings, and statues.

Exceptions are made for educational materials, children's learning tools, and necessary identification documents, though scholars differ on the permissibility of these based on necessity and intent.

Aisha's Obedience

The immediate compliance of Mother Aisha demonstrates the proper Muslim response to prophetic guidance - swift obedience without hesitation or question. This serves as a model for all believers in implementing religious commandments.
