Sahih al-Bukhari 3068
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي نَافِعٌ، أَنَّ عَبْدًا، لاِبْنِ عُمَرَ أَبَقَ فَلَحِقَ بِالرُّومِ، فَظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِ خَالِدُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، فَرَدَّهُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، وَأَنَّ فَرَسًا لاِبْنِ عُمَرَ عَارَ فَلَحِقَ بِالرُّومِ، فَظَهَرَ عَلَيْهِ فَرَدُّوهُ عَلَى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ. قَالَ أَبُو عَبْد اللَّهِ عَارَ مُشْتَقٌّ مِنْ الْعَيْرِ وَهُوَ حِمَارُ وَحْشٍ أَيْ هَرَبَ
Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from ʿUbayd Allah, who said: Nafiʿ told me that a slave belonging to Ibn ʿUmar ran away and joined the Byzantines. Khalid ibn al-Walid gained control of him and returned him to ʿAbd Allah. A horse belonging to Ibn ʿUmar also bolted and joined the Byzantines. He gained control of it, and they returned it to ʿAbd Allah. Abu ʿAbd Allah said: “ʿAra is derived from al-ʿayr, meaning a wild donkey; that is, it ran away.”
