Food, Meals - Sahih al-Bukhari 5392

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The food for two persons is sufficient for three, and the food of three persons is sufficient for four persons."

Commentary on the Hadith

This noble hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) contains profound wisdom regarding sustenance and blessings. The statement demonstrates that when food is shared with good intention and trust in Allah's provision, divine blessing (barakah) enters the sustenance, causing it to expand beyond its apparent quantity.

Scholars explain that this teaching encourages generosity, contentment, and trust in Allah's promise. When Muslims share their provisions with others, Allah blesses the food so that what appears insufficient becomes adequate. This principle applies not only to physical nourishment but extends to all forms of provision and blessings in life.

The hadith also teaches the importance of moderation and avoiding wastefulness. By recognizing that smaller quantities can suffice when shared properly, Muslims learn to be content with what Allah provides and to distribute resources equitably among family, guests, and those in need.

Practical Applications

This teaching should be implemented when hosting guests, during family meals, and in communal gatherings. Rather than worrying about insufficient provisions, Muslims should trust in Allah's promise and share what they have generously.

The principle extends beyond food to include wealth, time, and knowledge - all of which carry greater blessings when shared with others for Allah's pleasure.
