The Prophet (ﷺ) used to stand by a stem of a date-palm tree (while delivering a sermon). When the pulpit was placed for him we heard that stem crying like a pregnant she-camel till the Prophet (ﷺ) got down from the pulpit and placed his hand over it.
The Weeping Palm Trunk: A Commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari 918
This narration from the Book of Friday Prayer in Sahih al-Bukhari contains profound wisdom and demonstrates miraculous signs of the Prophet's truthfulness. The palm trunk served as his minbar (pulpit) initially, and when a proper pulpit was constructed, the trunk yearned for his proximity, emitting sounds of lamentation.
Significance of the Miracle
This event constitutes one of the clear miracles (mu'jizat) granted to the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), where inanimate objects demonstrated consciousness and love for him. Just as animals and humans testified to his prophethood, so too did this palm trunk.
The scholars explain that this demonstrates how all creation recognizes and glorifies Allah, and how the Prophet's presence brought blessings (barakah) to everything around him. The trunk's crying indicates the sentient nature of all creation in their own manner of tasbih (glorification of Allah).
Scholarly Interpretations
Imam al-Qurtubi states this miracle shows the superiority of the Prophet (ﷺ) and how even trees recognized his rank. The sound resembling a pregnant camel indicates the intensity of its yearning.
Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains in Fath al-Bari that this event occurred before the entire congregation, making it a publicly witnessed miracle. The Prophet's response of comforting the trunk demonstrates his compassion toward all creation.
Scholars note this incident also establishes the permissibility of using a pulpit for khutbah and confirms the special status of objects associated with acts of worship and proximity to righteous people.
Spiritual Lessons
This teaching reminds believers of the Prophet's unique status and encourages love for him. It demonstrates that true connection with Allah manifests in connection with His Messenger.
The incident teaches us about the consciousness of creation and our responsibility as khalifah (stewards) on earth. If a palm trunk could feel such attachment to the Prophet, how much more should humans cultivate love for him.
Ultimately, this miracle confirms the truth of Islam and provides comfort to believers that their love for the Prophet (ﷺ) is reciprocated by Allah's mercy and signs in creation.
