Sahih al-Bukhari 6186
Arabic hadith text
حَدَّثَنَا صَدَقَةُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ وُلِدَ لِرَجُلٍ مِنَّا غُلاَمٌ فَسَمَّاهُ الْقَاسِمَ فَقُلْنَا لاَ نَكْنِيكَ أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ وَلاَ كَرَامَةَ. فَأَخْبَرَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ " سَمِّ ابْنَكَ عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ ".
Translation
Sadaqah ibn al-Fadl narrated to us: Ibn Uyaynah informed us: Ibn al-Munkadir narrated to us, from Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: A boy was born to one of us, and he named him al-Qasim. We said, ‘We will not give you the kunya Abu al-Qasim, and you are not entitled to it.’ He told the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said, ‘Name your son Abd al-Rahman.’
