Sahih al-Bukhari 6140

Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr reported that Abu Bakr hosted some guests and told Abd al-Rahman to take care of them while he went to the Prophet, and to finish serving them before his return. Abd al-Rahman brought them the food he had and told them to eat. They asked where the master of the house was. He said, “Eat.” They replied that they would not eat until he came. Abd al-Rahman urged them to accept the hospitality, warning that if Abu Bakr returned and they had not eaten, they would hear about it from him. They refused, and Abd al-Rahman knew Abu Bakr would be upset with him. When Abu Bakr came, Abd al-Rahman withdrew. Abu Bakr asked what had happened, and the guests said Abd al-Rahman had brought them the food. Abu Bakr called Abd al-Rahman, but he stayed silent. Abu Bakr called again, and he remained silent. Then Abu Bakr swore that if Abd al-Rahman could hear him, he must come out. Abd al-Rahman went out and told Abu Bakr to ask the guests. They confirmed that he had brought them the food. Abu Bakr said that they had only waited for him, and swore he would not eat that night. The guests swore they would not eat until he did. Abu Bakr said he had never seen anything worse than that night, reproached them for not accepting the hospitality, and asked for the food. He brought it, said “In the name of Allah,” and remarked that the first refusal had been from Satan. Then he ate, and they ate.
