Musaddad narrated to us: Abd al-Wahid ibn Ziyad narrated to us: al-Ala ibn al-Musayyib narrated to us, saying: My father told me, from al-Bara ibn Azib, who said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went to bed, he slept on his right side, then said: O Allah, I surrender myself to You, turn my face toward You, entrust my affair to You, and rely upon You, in hope and fear of You. There is no refuge or escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever says these words and dies that night dies upon the natural faith. Istarhabuhum is from rahbah, fear. Malakut means dominion. The proverb says: Rahabut is better than rahamut; that is, to frighten is better than to show mercy.
