Hadith Text and Context

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever guarantees me (the chastity of) what is between his legs (i.e. his private parts), and what is between his jaws (i.e., his tongue), I guarantee him Paradise." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6807)

This profound hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari addresses two fundamental aspects of Islamic conduct that protect a believer from major sins and lead to divine reward.

Scholarly Commentary on Private Parts

Imam al-Nawawi explains that guarding "what is between his legs" refers to complete chastity - abstaining from all unlawful sexual relations including adultery, fornication, and homosexual acts. This protection extends to the eyes from looking at forbidden things and the heart from lustful thoughts that may lead to sin.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani emphasizes that this guarantee includes not only avoiding zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) but also all avenues leading to it, such as being in seclusion with non-mahram women or engaging in inappropriate touching.

Scholarly Commentary on the Tongue

Regarding "what is between his jaws," scholars interpret this as guarding the tongue from all harmful speech. This includes backbiting (ghiba), slander (buhtan), lying, cursing, obscene language, and vain talk that contains no benefit.

Al-Qurtubi states that the tongue is among the greatest blessings of Allah and its proper use is a sign of true faith. The believer must ensure that every word spoken is either beneficial or silent, following the Prophetic guidance that "whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent."

The Guarantee of Paradise

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali explains that the Prophet's guarantee of Paradise for one who protects these two organs demonstrates their immense importance in Islam. These two protections encompass numerous commandments and prohibitions, serving as a foundation for righteous character.

The scholars note that this guarantee applies to those who consistently guard these organs throughout their lives, with sincere intention and seeking Allah's pleasure, not merely occasional restraint.

Practical Implementation

Classical scholars advise that protecting the private parts requires lowering the gaze, avoiding mixed gatherings without necessity, and fasting to control desires. Protecting the tongue requires constant vigilance, remembering death, and reflecting before speaking.

This hadith, found in the chapter "Limits and Punishments set by Allah (Hudood)," serves as a profound reminder that the path to Paradise begins with controlling one's most basic instincts and faculties, transforming them from potential sources of sin into means of worship and divine proximity.
