Sahih al-Bukhari 3936

Yahya ibn Qazaʿa narrated to us: Ibrahim narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Amir ibn Saʿd ibn Malik, from his father, who said: “The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited me during the year of the Farewell Pilgrimage, when I was so ill that I was close to death. I said, ‘Messenger of Allah, you see how severe my pain is. I have wealth, and I have only one daughter to inherit from me. May I give two-thirds of my wealth in charity?’ He said, ‘No.’ I asked, ‘Then half?’ He said, ‘One-third, Saʿd—and one-third is a lot. It is better for you to leave your heirs wealthy than to leave them poor, begging from people.’”

Ahmad ibn Yunus narrated from Ibrahim with the wording: “To leave your descendants wealthy is better. You will not spend anything seeking Allah’s pleasure without Allah rewarding you for it, even the morsel you put in your wife’s mouth.” I said, “Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions?” He said, “If you live on and do any deed seeking Allah’s pleasure, you will only increase in rank and elevation through it. Perhaps you will live on until some people benefit through you and others are harmed through you. O Allah, complete my companions’ emigration for them, and do not turn them back on their heels. But poor Saʿd ibn Khawla”—the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lamented that he had died in Mecca. Ahmad ibn Yunus and Musa narrated from Ibrahim with the wording: “To leave your heirs…”
