Translation

Hamid ibn Umar narrated to me, from Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal: Humayd narrated to us: Anas narrated to us that when word reached Abdullah ibn Salam that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had arrived in Medina, he came to him and asked him some questions. He said, “I will ask you about three things that only a prophet knows: What is the first sign of the Hour? What is the first food the people of Paradise will eat? And why does a child resemble his father or his mother?” He said, “Jibril has just informed me of them.” Ibn Salam said, “He is the enemy of the Jews among the angels.” The Prophet said, “As for the first sign of the Hour, it is a fire that will drive people from the East to the West. The first food the people of Paradise will eat is an extra portion from the liver of a fish. As for the child: if the man’s fluid precedes the woman’s fluid, the child will resemble the father; if the woman’s fluid precedes the man’s, the child will resemble the mother.” Ibn Salam said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that you are the Messenger of Allah.”

He said, “Messenger of Allah, the Jews are a people given to slander, so ask them about me before they learn of my Islam.” The Jews came, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “What kind of man is Abdullah ibn Salam among you?” They said, “The best of us and the son of the best of us, the most excellent of us and the son of the most excellent of us.” The Prophet said, “What would you say if Abdullah ibn Salam embraced Islam?” They said, “May Allah protect him from that.” He asked them again, and they said the same. Then Abdullah came out to them and said, “I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” They said, “He is the worst of us and the son of the worst of us,” and disparaged him. Abdullah said, “This is what I feared, Messenger of Allah.”
