Amr ibn Ali related to me; Yahya related to us; Sufyan related to us; Sulayman related to me, from Ibrahim, from Abu Ma‘mar, from Abdullah, concerning the words, “seeking the means of approach to their Lord” (Qur’an 17:57). He said: “Some people among humankind used to worship some people among the jinn. The jinn accepted Islam, but these people held fast to their former religion.”
Al-Ashja‘i added, from Sufyan, from al-A‘mash, the words, “Say: Call upon those you claim [as gods]…” (Qur’an 17:56).
