Translation

Narrated Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “On the Day of Resurrection, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will say, ‘Adam!’ He will reply, ‘At Your service, our Lord, and ready to obey You.’ A call will be made: ‘Allah commands you to bring forth a contingent from your descendants for the Fire.’ He will ask, ‘My Lord, what is the contingent for the Fire?’ He will be told, ‘From every thousand—so I think he said—nine hundred and ninety-nine.’ At that, the pregnant woman will miscarry, and the child will turn grey; you will see people as though drunk, though they are not drunk, but Allah’s punishment is severe” (Qur’an 22:2). This greatly distressed the people, and their faces changed. The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Nine hundred and ninety-nine will be from Gog and Magog, and one from among you. Then, among all people, you will be like a black hair on the side of a white bull, or a white hair on the side of a black bull. I hope that you will make up a quarter of the people of Paradise.” We exclaimed, “Allah is greatest!” Then he said, “A third of the people of Paradise.” We exclaimed, “Allah is greatest!” Then he said, “Half of the people of Paradise.” We exclaimed, “Allah is greatest!” Abu Usamah reported from al-A‘mash the wording, “You will see people as though drunk, though they are not drunk,” and said, “From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.” Jarir, ‘Isa ibn Yunus, and Abu Mu‘awiyah reported the variant wording, “drunken, though they are not drunken.”
