Sad ibn Hafs related to us, saying: Shayban related to us, from Yahya, who said: Abu Salama informed me: A man came to Ibn Abbas while Abu Hurayra was sitting with him and said, ‘Give me a ruling about a woman who gave birth forty nights after her husband died.’ Ibn Abbas said, ‘The later of the two terms.’ I said, ‘But “for those who are pregnant, their term is until they deliver their burden.”’ Abu Hurayra said, ‘I agree with my nephew’—meaning Abu Salama. Ibn Abbas then sent his servant Kurayb to Umm Salama to ask her. She said, ‘The husband of Subay'a al-Aslamiyya was killed while she was pregnant, and she gave birth forty nights after his death. She was then proposed to, and the Messenger of Allah married her [to a man]. Abu al-Sanabil was among those who proposed to her.’
