Translation

Sulayman ibn Harb and Abu al-Nu'man said: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us, from Ayyub, from Muhammad, who said: I was in a gathering that included Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, whom his companions held in great esteem. He mentioned the later of the two terms, so I related the report of Subay'a bint al-Harith from Abdullah ibn Utba. One of his companions made a gesture to me. Muhammad said: I noticed it and said, ‘Then I would be bold indeed if I were to lie about Abdullah ibn Utba while he is in the region of Kufa.’ The man became embarrassed and said, ‘But his uncle did not say that.’ I met Abu Atiyya, Malik ibn Amir, and asked him. He began relating the report of Subay'a, so I asked, ‘Did you hear anything from Abdullah about her?’ He said, ‘We were with Abdullah, and he said: Do you impose the stricter ruling on her but not allow her the concession? The shorter surah of women came down after the longer one: “Those who are pregnant, their term is until they deliver their burden.”’
