Translation

Qutayba ibn Said related to us; Jarir related to us, from Musa ibn Abi Aisha, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, concerning His words, ‘Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.’ He said: Whenever Gabriel brought revelation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he would move his tongue and lips with it; this was difficult for him, and it could be seen in him. So Allah revealed the verses in ‘I swear by the Day of Resurrection’: ‘Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it. Indeed, its gathering and recitation are incumbent upon Us.’ He said: We will gather it in your breast; and its recitation: ‘When We have recited it, then follow its recitation’—that is, when We have sent it down, listen. ‘Then its clarification is incumbent upon Us’—We will clarify it upon your tongue. He said: Whenever Gabriel came to him, he would bow his head; when Gabriel departed, he recited it as Allah had promised him. ‘Woe to you, and again woe to you’ is a threat.
