Qabisa ibn Uqba related to us; Sufyan related to us, from al-Amash, from Ibrahim, from Alqama, who said: I entered Syria with a group of Abdullah’s Companions. Abu al-Darda heard that we had come, so he came to us and said, ‘Is there someone among you who recites?’ We said, ‘Yes.’ He asked, ‘Which of you is the best reciter?’ They pointed to me, and he said, ‘Recite.’ I recited: ‘By the night when it envelops, and by the day when it appears, and by the male and the female.’ He said, ‘Did you hear this from your companion’s mouth?’ I said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I too heard it from the Prophet’s mouth, but these people reject this recitation.’
