Ishaq ibn Mansur related to us; Abd al-Samad related to us; Harb related to us; Yahya related to us, saying: I asked Abu Salama which part of the Quran was first revealed. He said, ‘O you who are wrapped up.’ I said, ‘I have been told it was “Read in the name of your Lord who created.”’ Abu Salama said: I asked Jabir ibn Abdullah which part of the Quran was first revealed, and he said, ‘O you who are wrapped up.’ I said, ‘I have been told it was “Read in the name of your Lord.”’ He said, ‘I will tell you only what the Messenger of Allah said.’ The Messenger of Allah said: I withdrew in seclusion at Hira. When I had completed my seclusion, I descended and entered the valley. I was called, and I looked before me, behind me, to my right, and to my left. There he was, seated upon a throne between heaven and earth. I went to Khadija and said, ‘Wrap me up and pour cold water over me.’ Then these verses were revealed to me: ‘O you who are wrapped up! Arise and warn, and magnify your Lord.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • This version explicitly says the figure was seated on a throne between heaven and earth; that detail is not in the other Arabic variant at offset 163.

This wording explicitly describes the figure seated on a throne between heaven and earth; the immediately preceding Arabic version omits that detail.

Should the phrase be understood as a description of the figure seen during the call?
