حَدَّثَنَا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، قَالَ حَدَّثُونِي عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْرَأُ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ بِالطُّورِ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ هَذِهِ الآيَةَ {أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَىْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ * أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ بَلْ لاَ يُوقِنُونَ * أَمْ عِنْدَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمْ هُمُ الْمُسَيْطِرُونَ} كَادَ قَلْبِي أَنْ يَطِيرَ. قَالَ سُفْيَانُ فَأَمَّا أَنَا فَإِنَّمَا سَمِعْتُ الزُّهْرِيَّ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ مُطْعِمٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقْرَأُ فِي الْمَغْرِبِ بِالطُّورِ. لَمْ أَسْمَعْهُ زَادَ الَّذِي قَالُوا لِي.

Al-Humaydi related to us: Sufyan related to us, saying: They related to me from al-Zuhri, from Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mutim, from his father (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reciting Surat al-Tur in the Maghrib prayer. When he reached these verses—'Were they created from nothing, or are they the creators? Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they have no certainty. Or do they possess the treasures of your Lord, or are they the controllers?' (Quran 52:35–37)—my heart nearly flew. Sufyan said: As for me, I only heard al-Zuhri relate from Muhammad ibn Jubayr ibn Mutim, from his father: I heard the Prophet reciting Surat al-Tur in the Maghrib prayer. I did not hear the additional wording reported to me by those who told it.
