Umar ibn Hafs related to us; my father related to us; al-Amash related to us; Ibrahim related to me, from al-Aswad, from Abdullah, who said: While we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a cave, Surat al-Mursalat was revealed to him. He was reciting it, and I was receiving it directly from his mouth while his mouth was still moist with it. Then a snake sprang at us, and the Prophet said, ‘Kill it!’ We rushed toward it, but it got away. The Prophet said, ‘It was protected from your harm, just as you were protected from its harm.’ Umar said: I memorized this from my father in a cave at Mina.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The final sentence is the transmitter Umar’s note: he memorized the report from his father in a cave at Mina.

This transmission adds Umar’s note that he memorized it from his father in a cave at Mina, absent from the English witness.

Should the transmitter’s closing note be kept as part of the block?
