Al-Humaydi related to us; Sufyan related to us; Musa ibn Abi Aisha related to us—and he was trustworthy—from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: Whenever revelation came down to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would move his tongue with it—Sufyan described the manner—intending to memorize it. Then Allah revealed: ‘Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.’

  • The Arabic says Sufyan described the movement; the English witness specifies that the Prophet moved his lips.
