Al-Hasan ibn Muhammad related to us: Hajjaj related to us, from Ibn Jurayj, who said: Ibn Abi Mulayka informed me that Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr informed them that a delegation from Banu Tamim came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Abu Bakr said: Appoint al-Qaqa ibn Mabad. Umar said: Rather, appoint al-Aqra ibn Habis. Abu Bakr said: Did you only mean to oppose me?—or, alternatively, 'You meant nothing but opposing me.' Umar said: I did not mean to oppose you. They argued with each other until their voices rose, and regarding this was revealed: 'O you who believe, do not put yourselves forward before Allah and His Messenger'—to the end of the verse (Quran 49:1).

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic preserves an alternative wording in Abu Bakr’s rebuke:

The source explicitly records two closely related readings of the phrase.

Should both alternatives be retained in the English text?
