Prostration During Recital of Qur'an
Sahih al-Bukhari 1075
Hadith Text
When the Prophet (ﷺ) recited a Sura that contained the prostration he would prostrate and we would do the same and some of us (because of the heavy rush) could not find a place for prostration.
Commentary
This narration establishes the Sunnah of performing prostration when reciting or hearing verses containing sajdah (prostration). The Prophet's immediate prostration upon reaching such verses demonstrates its obligatory nature according to the majority of scholars.
The companions' imitation of the Prophet shows the importance of following his example in acts of worship. Their difficulty in finding space due to crowding indicates both their eagerness to follow the Sunnah and the large gatherings for Qur'an recitation during the Prophet's time.
Scholars note that this hadith proves the validity of congregational prostration during Qur'an recitation and emphasizes the virtue of hastening to perform acts of obedience. The prostration of recitation (sujūd at-tilāwah) remains a recommended practice whenever one recites or hears the designated verses.
