حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ عَمْرَةَ بِنْتِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ إِلَى الْمَكَانِ الَّذِي أَرَادَ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ إِذَا أَخْبِيَةٌ خِبَاءُ عَائِشَةَ، وَخِبَاءُ حَفْصَةَ، وَخِبَاءُ زَيْنَبَ، فَقَالَ ‏"‏ آلْبِرَّ تَقُولُونَ بِهِنَّ ‏"‏‏.‏ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ، فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ، حَتَّى اعْتَكَفَ عَشْرًا مِنْ شَوَّالٍ‏.‏

Translation

Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Malik informed us, from Yahya ibn Saeed, from Amra bint Abd al-Rahman, from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to observe retreat in the mosque. When he went to the place where he intended to stay in retreat, there were tents: Aisha tent, Hafsa tent, and Zaynab tent. He said, “Do you call this righteousness?” Then he went away and did not observe the retreat until he observed it for ten days in Shawwal.
