حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْىُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي مِثْلَ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ ـ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَىَّ ـ فَيُفْصَمُ عَنِّي وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ عَنْهُ مَا قَالَ، وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِيَ الْمَلَكُ رَجُلاً فَيُكَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ " . قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رضى الله عنها وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْىُ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَإِنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيَتَفَصَّدُ عَرَقًا.

Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us. He said: Malik informed us, from Hisham ibn Urwa, from his father, from Aisha, Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), that Al-Harith ibn Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: ‘O Messenger of Allah, how does the revelation come to you?’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: ‘Sometimes it comes to me like the ringing of a bell—and that is the hardest of it for me. Then it leaves me after I have retained what it said. And sometimes the angel appears to me as a man and speaks to me, and I retain what he says.’ Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: ‘I saw him when the revelation came down upon him on a very cold day; then it left him, and his forehead was streaming with sweat.’
