Sahih al-Bukhari
Sahih al-Bukhari 5371
Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, may God be pleased with him, that a deceased person who owed a debt would be brought to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. He would ask, “Did he leave anything in excess to pay his debt?” If he was told that the deceased had left enough to repay it, he would perform the funeral prayer. Otherwise, he would say to the Muslims, “Perform the prayer for your companion.” When God granted him victories, he said, “I am closer to the believers than they are to themselves. Whoever among the believers dies leaving a debt, its payment is my responsibility; and whoever leaves property, it belongs to his heirs.”
