The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention (on the Day of Resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him).
To make the Heart Tender (Ar-Riqaq)
Sahih al-Bukhari - Hadith 6499
Hadith Text
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "He who lets the people hear of his good deeds intentionally, to win their praise, Allah will let the people know his real intention (on the Day of Resurrection), and he who does good things in public to show off and win the praise of the people, Allah will disclose his real intention (and humiliate him)."
Commentary on Ostentation (Riya')
This profound hadith addresses the grave sin of ostentation (riya') - performing righteous deeds to be seen by people rather than for Allah's pleasure. The Prophet (ﷺ) warns that those who publicize their good deeds seeking worldly praise will face divine exposure on Judgment Day.
Scholars explain that riya' corrupts the very essence of worship, which requires sincere intention (ikhlas) for Allah alone. When one mixes worship with desire for human recognition, it becomes like mixing pure water with impurities.
Divine Recompense
Allah's response to ostentation is proportional: as the person sought temporary praise from creation, Allah will permanently expose their hypocrisy before all creation on the Day of Resurrection. This public humiliation is the just recompense for seeking worldly admiration through acts meant for the Hereafter.
The repetition in the hadith emphasizes the severity of this sin and serves as a stern warning to constantly purify one's intentions.
Practical Guidance
The scholars advise concealing good deeds when possible, as this helps protect sincerity. One should frequently renew their intention and seek refuge from the hidden shirk of ostentation. The fear of having deeds rejected due to impure intentions should motivate constant self-examination.
