`Umrah (Minor pilgrimage)

Abdullah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik informed us, from Sumayy, the freedman of Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Salih al-Samman, from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: One Umrah to the next is an expiation for what lies between them, and the accepted Hajj has no reward except Paradise.

Ahmad ibn Muhammad informed us: Abdullah informed us: Ibn Jurayj informed us that Ikrimah ibn Khalid asked Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, about performing Umrah before Hajj. He said: There is no harm. Ikrimah said: Ibn Umar said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Umrah before Hajj. Ibrahim ibn Sad reported from Ibn Ishaq: Ikrimah ibn Khalid told me: I asked Ibn Umar the same question.

Amr ibn Ali narrated to us: Abu Asim narrated to us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, who said: Ikrimah ibn Khalid said: I asked Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, the same question.

Qutaybah narrated to us: Jarir narrated to us, from Mansur, from Mujahid, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and I entered the mosque and saw Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, sitting beside Aisha room. We also saw people praying the forenoon prayer in the mosque. We asked him about their prayer, and he said: It is an innovation. Then he asked him: How many times did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, perform Umrah? He said: Four, one of them in Rajab. We were reluctant to contradict him. He said: We heard Aisha, Mother of the Believers, cleaning her teeth in the room. Urwah said: Mother, Mother of the Believers, do you hear what Abu Abd al-Rahman is saying? She said: What is he saying? He said: He says the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed four Umrahs, one of them in Rajab. She said: May Allah have mercy on Abu Abd al-Rahman. He never performed an Umrah without my being present with him, and he never performed one in Rajab at all.

Abu Asim informed us: Ibn Jurayj informed us, who said: Ata informed me, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, who said: I asked Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her. She said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, never performed Umrah in Rajab.

Hassan ibn Hassan narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: I asked Anas, may Allah be pleased with him: How many times did the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, perform Umrah? He said: Four: the Umrah of al-Hudaybiyyah in Dhu al-Qadah, when the polytheists barred him; an Umrah the following year in Dhu al-Qadah, when he made peace with them; and the Umrah of al-Jiرانah, when he divided the spoils—I think he means the spoils of Hunayn. I asked: How many times did he perform Hajj? He said: Once.

Abu al-Walid Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatadah, who said: I asked Anas, may Allah be pleased with him. He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Umrah at the place where they turned him back; the following year, the Umrah of al-Hudaybiyyah; an Umrah in Dhu al-Qadah; and an Umrah together with his Hajj.

Hudbah narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us and said: He performed four Umrahs in Dhu al-Qadah, except the Umrah he performed together with his Hajj: the Umrah of al-Hudaybiyah; the Umrah the following year; the Umrah at al-Jiرانah, where he divided the spoils of Hunayn; and an Umrah together with his Hajj.

Ahmad ibn Uthman narrated to us: Shurayh ibn Maslamah narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Yusuf narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I asked Masruq, Ata, and Mujahid. They said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Umrah in Dhu al-Qadah before performing Hajj. He said: I heard al-Bara ibn Azib, may Allah be pleased with them both, say: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Umrah in Dhu al-Qadah twice before performing Hajj.

Musaddad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Ata, who said: I heard Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, tell us that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to a woman from the Ansar—whom Ibn Abbas named, but I have forgotten her name: What prevented you from performing Hajj with us? She said: We had a water-carrying camel. Abu So-and-so—her husband—and his son rode it, leaving us a camel that we used to draw water. He said: When Ramadan comes, perform Umrah during it, for an Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to Hajj. Or he said something similar.

Muhammad ibn Salam informed us: Abu Muawiyah informed us: Hisham narrated to us, from his father, from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, near the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah. He said to us: Whoever among you wishes to enter ihram for Hajj may do so, and whoever wishes to enter ihram for Umrah may do so. Had I not brought a sacrificial animal, I would have entered ihram for Umrah. She said: Some of us entered ihram for Umrah and some for Hajj. I was among those who entered ihram for Umrah. The Day of Arafah came while I was menstruating, and I complained to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: Abandon your Umrah, undo your hair, comb it, and enter ihram for Hajj. On the night of al-Hasbah, he sent Abd al-Rahman with me to al-Tanim, and I entered ihram for an Umrah in place of my Umrah.

Ali ibn Abdullah narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Amr, who heard Amr ibn Aws, that Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both, informed him that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered him to have Aisha ride behind him and to take her for Umrah from al-Tanim.

Sufyan said: On one occasion I heard it from Amr. How many times have I heard it from Amr!

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Abd al-Wahhab ibn Abd al-Majid narrated to us, from Habib al-Muallim, from Ata. Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, told me that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions entered ihram for Hajj, and none of them had a sacrificial animal except the Prophet and Talhah. Ali had returned from Yemen with a sacrificial animal and said: I entered ihram in the same manner as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet gave his Companions permission to make it Umrah, circumambulate the House, shorten their hair, and become lawful, except those who had sacrificial animals. They said: Shall we go to Mina while the penis of one of us is still dripping? This reached the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: If I could start over, I would not have brought a sacrificial animal. Were it not that I have a sacrificial animal with me, I would become lawful. Aisha began menstruating and performed all the rites, except that she did not circumambulate the House. When she became pure and circumambulated, she said: Are you leaving with both Umrah and Hajj, while I leave with Hajj alone? He ordered Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr to go out with her to al-Tanim. She performed Umrah after Hajj, in Dhu al-Hijjah. Suraqah ibn Malik ibn Jushum met the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at al-Aqabah while he was stoning it, and said: Is this specific to you, Messenger of Allah? He said: No, rather it is for all time.

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us: Hisham narrated to us, who said: My father informed me: Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, told me: We set out with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, near the new moon of Dhu al-Hijjah. The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever wishes to enter ihram for Umrah may do so, and whoever wishes to enter ihram for Hajj may do so. Had I not offered a sacrifice, I would have entered ihram for Umrah. Some of them entered ihram for Umrah and some for Hajj. I was among those who entered ihram for Umrah. I began menstruating before entering Mecca, and the Day of Arafah arrived while I was menstruating. I complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said: Leave your Umrah, undo your hair, comb it, and enter ihram for Hajj. I did so. On the night of al-Hasbah, he sent Abd al-Rahman with me to al-Tanim and had me ride behind him. I entered ihram for an Umrah in place of my Umrah. Allah brought her Hajj and Umrah to completion. None of this required a sacrificial offering, charity, or fasting.

Musaddad narrated to us: Yazid ibn Zuray narrated to us: Ibn Awn narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad; and from Ibn Awn, from Ibrahim, from al-Aswad. They both said: Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said: Messenger of Allah, the people are returning with two rites, while I am returning with one. She was told: Wait. When you become pure, go out to al-Tanim, enter ihram, then come to us at such-and-such a place. But it will be according to your expenditure or your exertion.

Abu Nuaym narrated to us: Aflah ibn Humayd narrated to us, from al-Qasim, from Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: We set out having entered ihram for Hajj, during the months of Hajj and under its sacred restrictions. We stopped at Sarif. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to his Companions: Whoever has no sacrificial animal and wishes to make this Umrah may do so; whoever has a sacrificial animal must not. The Prophet and some of his strong Companions had sacrificial animals, so they did not perform Umrah. The Prophet came to me while I was crying and said: What makes you cry? I said: I heard you tell your Companions what you said, and I have been prevented from Umrah. He said: What is the matter with you? I said: I am not praying. He said: That will not harm you. You are one of the daughters of Adam; what has been decreed for them has been decreed for you. Remain in your Hajj; perhaps Allah will grant you the Umrah. She said: I remained until we departed from Mina and stopped at al-Muhassab. He called Abd al-Rahman and said: Take your sister outside the Sacred Precinct so that she may enter ihram for Umrah. Then the two of you complete your circumambulation; I will wait for you here. We came in the middle of the night. He said: Have you finished? I said: Yes. He called his Companions to depart. The people set out, including those who had circumambulated the House before the Fajr prayer. Then he set out toward Medina.

Abu Nuaym narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us: Ata narrated to us, who said: Safwan ibn Yala ibn Umayyah told me—meaning from his father—that a man came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at al-Jiरणanah wearing a cloak with traces of khaluq perfume—or, he said, yellow coloring. He said: What do you instruct me to do for my Umrah? Allah sent revelation to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he was covered with a cloth. I wished I could see the Prophet when revelation was descending upon him. Umar said: Come, would you like to look at the Prophet while Allah is sending revelation down to him? I said: Yes. He lifted the edge of the cloth, and I looked at him. He was making a rumbling sound—I think he said, like the snoring of a young camel. When the revelation had lifted from him, he said: Where is the man who asked about Umrah? Take off your cloak, wash the traces of khaluq from yourself, remove the yellow coloring, and do in your Umrah what you do in your Hajj.

Abdullah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik informed us, from Hisham ibn Urwah, from his father, who said: When I was young, I said to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: What do you make of the words of Allah, Blessed and Exalted: Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. Whoever performs Hajj to the House or Umrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them? I think there is no blame upon anyone for not going between them. Aisha said: No. Had it been as you say, it would have said: There is no blame upon him for not going between them. Rather, this verse was revealed concerning the Ansar. They used to enter ihram for Manat, which was situated opposite Qudayd, and they considered it improper to go between Safa and Marwah. When Islam came, they asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about that, and Allah Most High revealed: Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. Whoever performs Hajj to the House or Umrah, there is no blame upon him for going between them.

Sufyan and Abu Muawiyah added from Hisham: Allah does not complete the Hajj or Umrah of anyone who does not go between Safa and Marwah.

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from Jarir, from Ismail, from Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Umrah, and we performed it with him. When he entered Mecca, he circumambulated, and we circumambulated with him. He went to Safa and Marwah, and we went there with him. We used to shield him from the people of Mecca, fearing that someone might strike him. A companion of mine asked him: Did he enter the Kaaba? He said: No. He said: Then tell us what he said about Khadijah. He said: Give Khadijah glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of qasab, in which there is no clamor and no weariness.

Al-Humaydi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Amr ibn Dinar, who said: We asked Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, about a man who performed circumambulation of the House during Umrah but did not go between Safa and Marwah. May he approach his wife? He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived and circumambulated the House seven times, prayed two rakahs behind the Station, and went between Safa and Marwah seven times. You have a good example in the Messenger of Allah. He said: We also asked Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, and he said: He must not approach her until he goes between Safa and Marwah.
