The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If somebody recited the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqara at night, that will be sufficient for him."
Virtues of the Qur'an - Sahih al-Bukhari 5009
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If somebody recited the last two Verses of Surat Al-Baqara at night, that will be sufficient for him."
Commentary on the Hadith
This noble hadith indicates the immense virtue of the final two verses of Surat al-Baqarah (2:285-286). The phrase "sufficient for him" (kafatāhu) has been interpreted by scholars in multiple ways, all demonstrating the comprehensive protection and blessing these verses provide.
Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains in Fath al-Bari that this sufficiency may refer to protection from evil, Satanic whispers, and harm throughout the night. Other interpretations include sufficiency in reward equivalent to night prayers, protection of one's faith, or preservation of one's wealth and family.
These verses contain the believer's affirmation of faith, acceptance of divine decree, and supplication for ease - making them a complete spiritual protection. The timing "at night" is significant as night is when evils and fears are most prevalent, and these verses serve as a fortress against them.
Scholarly Interpretations
Imam al-Qurtubi states these verses encompass the pillars of faith: belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Final Day - thus protecting one's fundamental beliefs.
Ibn al-Qayyim elaborates that the recitation serves as protection from magic, evil eye, Satanic insinuations, and nightly terrors. The comprehensive nature of the protection reflects the comprehensive nature of the verses themselves.
The consensus among scholars is that this practice is highly recommended (mustahabb) before sleeping, combining both remembrance of Allah and seeking His protection during vulnerability.
