Scholarly Commentary

The final two verses of Surat al-Baqarah (2:285-286) contain comprehensive affirmations of faith, encompassing belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day. Their recitation serves as a spiritual protection and suffices the reciter from additional night prayers due to their profound meanings.

Scholars explain that "sufficient" means these verses provide adequate spiritual protection and reward for the night, potentially replacing the need for lengthy voluntary prayers while still earning great merit. They contain the essence of Islamic creed and complete submission to Allah's decree.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani notes that the verses' completeness stems from their inclusion of fundamental beliefs, acknowledgment of human limitations, and seeking Allah's mercy - making them particularly powerful for nighttime spiritual protection and drawing closer to the Divine.

Practical Application

This practice is recommended before sleeping as protection from evil and as a comprehensive act of worship. The recitation demonstrates the Qur'an's miraculous nature where brief portions can contain immense spiritual benefits equivalent to longer acts of devotion.
