Scholarly Commentary

The "sufficiency" mentioned in this hadith refers to protection from evil, harm, and Satanic whispers during the night. Scholars explain that these two verses (285-286 of Surah al-Baqarah) contain comprehensive affirmations of faith, submission to Divine decree, and prayers for forgiveness and mercy.

Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani comments in Fath al-Bari that these verses serve as a spiritual shield, protecting the reciter throughout the night until morning. The verses encapsulate the essence of Islamic belief - complete trust in Allah, acceptance of His commands, and seeking His protection from burdens beyond one's capacity.

The timing "at night" is significant as darkness is when evil forces are most active and when human vigilance is lowest. This recitation thus provides divine protection when one is most vulnerable. Scholars also note that this practice demonstrates how specific portions of the Qur'an carry special blessings and protective qualities when recited with understanding and faith.
